“AC tune-up” can mean very different things depending on who’s doing it. Here’s what a thorough one should actually include, so you know what you’re paying for.

Outdoor Unit

• Coil cleaning — dirt and debris on the condenser coil restrict its ability to release heat.
• Clearance check — confirming at least 2 feet of clearance around the unit for proper airflow.
• Fan and motor inspection — checking for wear, unusual noise, or vibration.
• Electrical connections — checking for loose or corroded connections.

Indoor Unit

• Evaporator coil check — cleaning if needed, since a dirty coil reduces cooling capacity.
• Blower motor and fan inspection — confirming proper airflow into your ductwork.
• Condensate drain check — a clogged drain line can cause water damage or system shutoffs.

System-Wide Checks

• Refrigerant charge verification — confirming it’s at the manufacturer’s specified level.
• Electrical component testing — capacitors and contactors are common failure points and worth testing proactively.
• Thermostat calibration — confirming it’s reading and controlling accurately.
• Full performance test — running the system and checking temperature differential between return and supply air to confirm it’s cooling properly.

What a Rushed Tune-Up Skips

A quick visit that just glances at the outdoor unit and calls it done skips most of what actually prevents breakdowns — electrical component testing, coil cleaning, and refrigerant verification in particular. If a tune-up takes only a few minutes, it’s worth asking what was actually checked.

How Often to Get One

Once a year, ideally in spring before the first hot stretch, gives time to order parts if something needs attention before you actually need the cooling.
