Frozen Evaporator Coil: Causes, Fixes, and What Not to Do

Finding ice on your air conditioner’s indoor coil or refrigerant lines is alarming, but it’s a symptom of an underlying problem rather than a problem on its own. Here’s what’s usually behind it.

What Causes a Frozen Coil

Restricted Airflow

The evaporator coil needs a steady flow of warm air moving across it to stay above freezing. A dirty filter, blocked vents, closed registers, or a failing blower motor can all restrict that airflow enough to let the coil freeze.

Low Refrigerant

When refrigerant is low — always because of a leak — the pressure inside the coil drops, and the coil can get cold enough to freeze the moisture in the air around it, even with normal airflow.

Running the AC in Cold Weather

If you run your central AC when outdoor temperatures are quite low, the system can behave abnormally and ice up. This is uncommon but worth knowing if you’re running the system outside typical conditions.

Why You Shouldn’t Just Keep Running It

Running your AC with a frozen coil doesn’t fix the problem — it makes it worse. Ice continues to build, further restricting airflow, and can eventually cause liquid refrigerant to reach the compressor, which isn’t designed to handle it. That can turn an affordable repair into a compressor replacement.

What To Do If You Find Ice

1. Turn the system off at the thermostat, but leave the fan running if possible to help it thaw.
2. Don’t try to chip the ice off — this risks damaging the coil.
3. Check your filter while you wait — if it’s visibly dirty, that’s likely a contributing factor.
4. Call for service once it’s thawed, or right away if you’re not comfortable diagnosing it yourself.
