Why Is My Furnace Making Loud Noises?

A furnace makes some normal operating sounds, but new or unusual noises are almost always worth investigating. Here’s what different sounds typically indicate.

Banging or Booming

A bang at startup often means delayed ignition — gas builds up briefly before catching, causing a small explosion when it finally ignites. This can indicate a dirty burner or ignition component and is worth having checked, since repeated delayed ignition can stress the heat exchanger over time.

Squealing or Screeching

This is frequently a belt or motor bearing issue — a belt that’s worn or slipping, or a blower motor bearing that’s wearing out. Left alone, this can progress to a full motor failure.

Rattling

Loose panels, screws, or ductwork connections are common causes. It’s usually not urgent but is worth checking, since a loose panel can also affect the furnace’s safety switch.

Clicking

Some clicking during startup and shutdown is normal (this is often the igniter or relay). Persistent or repeated clicking without the furnace actually starting can indicate an ignition problem.

Humming

A loud hum, especially from the blower compartment, often points to an electrical or motor issue — worth having checked before it progresses.

Popping

Ductwork expanding and contracting with temperature changes can cause popping sounds and is usually harmless. If it’s excessive, it can sometimes indicate an oversized system or duct sizing issue.

Whistling

Often points to an airflow restriction — a very dirty filter, closed vents, or a duct leak forcing air through a small gap.

When to Turn It Off and Call

If you hear a loud bang, smell gas, or notice a burning smell along with a new noise, turn the system off and call for service — these combinations point to something that shouldn’t wait.
