Furnace Won't Turn On? Here's What to Check

A furnace that won’t turn on at all is one of the more stressful HVAC problems, especially in cold weather. Before assuming the worst, here’s what’s worth checking first.

1. Check the Thermostat

Make sure it’s set to “heat” mode and the target temperature is above the current room temperature. If it’s a battery-powered thermostat, dead batteries can cause it to stop communicating with the furnace entirely.

2. Check the Power Switch

Furnaces have a dedicated power switch, often near the unit and sometimes looking like a standard light switch. Make sure it hasn’t been accidentally switched off.

3. Check the Circuit Breaker

A tripped breaker will cut power to the furnace. If you find one tripped, reset it once — but if it trips again, that’s a sign of an electrical issue that needs a professional look rather than repeated resetting.

4. Check the Furnace Door

Most furnaces have a safety switch that prevents operation if the access panel isn’t fully closed and latched. If it was recently serviced or opened, make sure it’s properly secured.

5. Check the Pilot Light (Older Systems)

If you have an older furnace with a standing pilot light, check whether it’s lit. If it’s gone out repeatedly, that can point to a draft issue or a failing thermocouple.

6. Check the Air Filter

A severely clogged filter can trigger a safety shutoff on some systems as a precaution against overheating. This is also just generally good to check regularly.
