8 Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair

Most furnace failures don’t happen out of nowhere — there are usually warning signs in the weeks or months before. Catching them early is the difference between a straightforward repair and an emergency no-heat call in the middle of a cold snap.

1. Short Cycling

If your furnace turns on and off frequently without completing a full heating cycle, something is causing it to shut down prematurely — often a dirty flame sensor, a clogged filter, or an overheating issue. Short cycling also wears out components faster, so it’s worth addressing early.

2. Cold Air From the Vents

This can mean a few different things: a delayed ignition problem, a thermostat set to “fan” instead of “auto,” or the system running its blower before the heat exchanger has warmed up. A little cool air at startup is normal — sustained cold air is not.

3. Strange Noises

Banging, screeching, or rattling noises are your furnace telling you something is loose, worn, or misaligned. A delayed ignition can also cause a bang as gas builds up before catching. Any new or unusual noise is worth a diagnosis rather than waiting to see if it goes away.

4. Rising Heating Bills

If your usage habits haven’t changed but your gas or electric bill is climbing, your furnace may be losing efficiency — often due to a dirty component, an aging heat exchanger, or a system working harder than it should to reach the same temperature.

5. Yellow or Flickering Pilot Light (Standing Pilot Systems)

A healthy pilot light burns a steady blue. A yellow, flickering, or orange flame can indicate a ventilation issue or incomplete combustion, which is also a potential safety concern — worth having checked promptly.

6. Frequent Repairs

If you’ve called for a furnace repair more than once or twice this season, that’s usually a sign the system is nearing the end of its useful life rather than a coincidence of bad luck. At some point the cost of ongoing repairs starts to outweigh the cost of replacement.

7. Furnace Is 15-20+ Years Old

Age alone doesn’t mean a furnace needs to be replaced, but it does mean any new issue deserves an honest look at repair-versus-replacement math rather than an automatic repair.

8. A Gas Smell

This one isn’t a “wait and see” sign. If you smell gas near your furnace, leave the house, don’t operate any switches, and call your gas utility’s emergency line before calling anyone else.
